Guitar Pro files, played like a game
Got a Guitar Pro tab (.gp5, .gp, .gpx) you only ever look at? Guitar Highway imports it as it is and turns it into a practice song: notes fall down the highway, you play along, and the app listens to your guitar and tells you how you did.
Guitar Pro import is available from app version 1.0.4. If you have an older version, update the app in the App Store or Google Play.
What comes along with the file
- Track selection — pick the part you play. The other tracks (drums, bass, other guitars) can play as the original backing.
- Strings, frets and fingers — keep the fingering written in the file (“Use Guitar Pro fingering”), or turn it off and the app re-assigns easier positions.
- Techniques — hammer-ons and pull-offs, slides, vibrato, bends, palm mute and let ring. They show as P / H badges in the editor and as dashed lines and markers on the highway.
- Chords — “Include chords (lowest note as root)”, or turn it off to bring in the melody (top note) only.
- Bar range — set a start and end bar to import just part of a song. Repeats, voltas and D.S./coda are expanded on import.
- Lowered tunings — for half-step or whole-step down songs, import with the original fingering and the song tuning is set for you (the tuner follows).
How to (iPhone)
- In the app, open the Score Capture tab and tap Import Guitar Pro file.
- Choose a .gp5 / .gp / .gpx file in the Files app (iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).
- Pick the Part to play, switch on the tracks you want under Backing (original song), check the options and tap Import.
- Check the notes and techniques in the editor and fix anything that is off. Then tap Save — the song appears in Riff Lab › My songs.
- Tap Start practice. The Backing slider on the song screen sets the volume of the original tracks.
Supported formats and limits
| Format | Status |
|---|---|
| .gp (Guitar Pro 7 / 8) · .gpx (6) | Import supported |
| .gp5 · .gp4 · .gp3 | Import supported |
| Formats older than GP3 | Can't be opened — re-save from Guitar Pro as .gp |
Songs that are not in standard tuning (EADGBE) keep their pitch and get their fingering re-assigned. Notation the app can't import (dead notes, grace notes) is reported on import, not dropped silently.
This is a practice app, not a full notation editor. After import you can fix notes in the built-in editor.
FAQ
Do I need Guitar Pro installed?
No. The app reads the file (.gp5, .gp, .gpx and so on) by itself. You don't need the Guitar Pro program.
Where do I get Guitar Pro files?
Use files you made yourself or that you have the right to use. We don't recommend downloading or sharing other people's copyrighted tabs without permission.
What does it cost?
It's free — no ads and no login.
Will I hear the original recording?
In beat mode the other tracks of the file play as backing. The part you are playing is left out.
Is it on Android?
Yes — the same feature is in the Google Play version. Get it on Google Play.
